Deep Tissue Massage
The treatment
Choosing the pressure
Deep tissue massage uses slower movements and sustained pressure on selected areas. You might choose it when you want more time on your shoulders or back and prefer a firmer touch to broad, lighter strokes.
Describe the area you would like the therapist to focus on before the session begins. During the massage, you can ask for the pressure to be eased or for the therapist to move on to another area.
Tell the team which area you have in mind when enquiring about a deep tissue session.
Time on one area
Slow movements and sustained pressure give one area more time. If you are mainly thinking about your back or shoulders, say which part you would like the therapist to prioritise. That detail helps distinguish a focused session from a massage that moves across the whole body.
Finding a comfortable pressure
A preference for focused work and a preference for very firm pressure are two different things. Describe both the area you want addressed and the amount of pressure that feels comfortable. During the massage, you can ask for either to change.
Before you book
A booking question
How do I describe the area I want worked on?
Be as specific as you can. For example, you could say “the top of my right shoulder” and add whether a light, moderate or firmer touch feels comfortable there. This gives the therapist a clearer starting point than asking for a stronger massage everywhere.
